Good afternoon Hong Kong, good morning Puebla.
As metropolitan area, Mexico City is the third most populous city in the world, after Tokyo and Seoul, slightly above New York. Mexico is a country with a population of 110 million people, Ranks 11th in the OECD when measuring GDP. It is the second country with more Catholics (89% of the total population)
Today Mexico is in the news around the globe due to the outbreak of the virus A (H1N1). Today the country has reported 590 laboratory confirmed cases, including 25 that died. I'm sure there are hundreds of blogs that can be more precise about the details of this virus and its treatment; please let me approach this issue on a more personnel side.
Our everyday activities have been affected and our economy will have to overcome greater difficulties than those posed by the current global financial crisis. But this does not mean that the country is totally paralyzed, let alone thousands of people are infected.
Up until today my wife and daughter, have not been outside our home for 12 days. With the above said, this may seem excessive, but I put on the table that the little one is less than 4 months and we are not willing to risk her health by considering that the media, the government, the world health organization and lots of experts may be overreacting. I believe that following the instructions we do a little of the part we are responsible for.
As a Catholic, the most difficult part is not able to attend Mass. But I must say I enjoy a lot to be able to spend some time with them.
Many people in Mexico and abroad, believes this is more a media thing, and to a large extent this can be for many an act of faith. Is like believing in God, most of us don’t have proof of the existence of God, but if He exists it is better to behave and enjoy eternal life. If you think of this argument as childish, do the test and you will see how good is the Lord.
This virus, we now know, should not be fatal. Following indications of basic sanitation and seeking medical attention on time when signs of illness appear may prevent people from dying by this and other viruses and diseases. I know that lots of people blame our crippled health system, the government or even the Yeti, but at the end of the day, we must seek to improve our personal hygiene and that of our homes and workplaces. Here we put our small fee to improve our quality of life. For now my prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives, because it must be hard to accept that someone in your family die of influenza in the twenty-first century. Because it is always difficult to deal with the death of a loved one, and these 25 people, I dare to imagine, were very dear to someone at least. Do not let the numbers take away the human face of those who are no longer among us.
